What is Tribal Improvisational style?
Tribal improvisational style belly dance is an American format whose
movements are rooted in the ancient traditions of many Middle Eastern
dances. Through development of a simple but structured movement
vocabulary, dancers use cues to create a synchronized group
performance that is always improvisational. The lack of choreography
requires each dancer to focus on fellow dancers to be able to move
together as a unified group, and allows the group to build a unique
experience each time they come together to dance. This is an empowering
format of dance that will build personal strength and flexibility, as well as
build an amazing connection with the women of your community.
This style of belly dance is originally based on the styles of Jamila
Salimpour and Masha Archer; its structure was formalized and made
popular by Carolena Nericcio and her troupe Fat Chance Belly Dance, who
still actively perform and teach their own personal style called American
Tribal Style or ATS. Kajira Djoumahna, a former student of Carolena, later
adapted the style further to include leading techniques from both hips to
expand a troupe's opportunities for variety in performance and create a
more balanced dancer, as well as introduced new techniques and
innovations. She continues to teach and perform with her troupe
BlackSheep BellyDance International and host Tribal Fest, one of the
world's largest bellydance festivals, held annually in California. Both of
these formats continue to be adapted by several others to create a style of
dance that is unique to each teacher or troupe.
